For Filipinos, the modern day poetry slam is an echo of the balagtasan (a poetic, political debate). Continuing the work of those who have paved the way before us, from Jose Rizal to Jessica Hagedorn, the slam provides a platform for us to showcase the variety of voices and points of view among Filipinos and Filipino-Americans today.
The lineup includes published authors and seasoned slam champions who are recognized both locally and nationally. There's no limit to what we do with our words, now let us get the community to hear our stories!
1st place wins $500. 2nd place is awarded $250 and 3rd place is awarded $100 with miscellaneous prizes.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible. No stairs. Chairs are provided on first come first serve, and people may be expected to stand. Two bathrooms are gender neutral. Amplified sound; volume is sporadically loud. Wear layers if temperature sensitive. Use scent-free materials and be aware of fragrance sensitivity.
We are asking you to support Filipino art and culture by donating to this event. Your support will help provide the cash prizes for top three poets, meals, decorations, equipment, supplies, and programming needs.
