Press "start" on a one-of-a-kind musical adventure. Cleveland pianist, composer and recording artist Rob Kovacs brings his alter ego, 88bit, to the Hoover Auditorium stage, performing note-for-note arrangements of classic 8-bit video game soundtracks from the original Nintendo Entertainment System and other consoles. Kovacs grew up with piano lessons on one side of the house and arcade games on the other. A classically trained musician who made headlines at Baldwin Wallace University for performing Steve Reich’s Piano Phase solo on two pianos at once, he combined his love of music and gaming in 2009 by arranging themes from one of his favorite games, Mega Man 2. What began as a fun experiment quickly leveled up into 88bit.
With lightning-fast precision, Kovacs recreates early video game music that was originally written for sound chips, not human hands. Each arrangement takes months to craft. transforming favorites like Mega Man, Castlevania and The Legend of Zelda into thrilling live performances.
Parents will love the nostalgia. Kids will be amazed watching it unfold on stage. Fun, fast-paced and family-friendly, 88bit bridges generations together through piano music.
