The Philharmonic Wind Ensemble (PWE) presents music written for the Harmonie, a small ensemble of wind players, often in the combination of pairs of Oboes, Clarinets, French Horns and Bassoons. This Octet combination was used by composers of the 18th century to great effect not only in original works but also, transcriptions of contemporary music. PWE performs Beethoven’s Wind Octet in Eb, a composition known as ‘Harmoniemusik’; an important genre that uses wind instruments and originated as early as the 18th century. Arguably, this laid the roots that led to the growth of the wind band as a medium. The Octet will also be performing Mozart’s Overture to ‘The Magic Flute’. Poulenc’s charming Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano and Persichetti’s dramatic ‘Parable for Solo Horn’ rounds out this concert.
Join us at the Esplanade Recital Studio and enjoy a fantastic repertoire of performances by PWE's talented musicians. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to immerse in the finest classical chamber music and have a great time with friends and family. See you there!
Philharmonic Wind Ensemble
Formerly known as Philharmonic Chamber Winds, the Philharmonic Wind Ensemble (PWE) is part of the Philharmonic Wind Orchestra family. PWE programs music written for smaller wind groups and performed by professional musicians from Philharmonic Wind Orchestra. This rich treasure-box of music has allowed these musicians to explore and present a wide range of gems such as Mozart’s C minor Wind Serenade, Zechariah Goh’s 4 Taiwanese Aboriginal Songs for Wind Quintet, Martin Butler’s Dirty Beasts (with narrator William Ledbetter).
