Professor at Nagoya College of Music, Representative for the Balinese gamelan group Sekar Sakura, Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, and Marimba One Artist Maki Takafuji leads a marimba masterclass at the 7th TICAFEST.
Maki commissioned Nagoya Marimbas from Steve Reich and gave its world premiere, and presented the Japan premiere of his Mallet Quartet. Maki has also performed recitals throughout Japan and appeared frequently as a concerto soloist with orchestras, including the Japan premiere of Héctor Infanzón’s Vibraphone Concerto. She was selected for the first YouTube Symphony Orchestra audition organised by Google and performed at Carnegie Hall. She has also performed in Germany, served as a juror for the International Marimba Competition in Germany, and has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music.
Programme details
The lecture session focuses on Prof Maki’s work with Steve Reich, celebrating his 90th birthday this year.
Two demonstration pupils will be selected for masterclass sessions with Prof Maki.
The programme runs approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

If you wish to apply for demonstration pupils, please first purchase an ‘Audience member (standard)’ ticket before filling out the following online form. Application results will be announced in March via email.

Audience admission remarks
- Each ticket only admits one person
- For ages 6 or above
- Unauthorised photography, audio, and video recording are prohibited
- Smoking, eating, and drinking are not allowed inside the auditorium
- Late-comers will not be admitted until a suitable break
- Ticket holders are requested to comply with all other house rules posted at the admission point
