7th Annual Ending Homeless Fundraiser
About this Event
Nobody is immune to becoming homeless. There is no one cause or typical profile of homelessness. Many households in the United States are just 2 paychecks away from becoming at risk of facing this situation. The Raritan Bay Area YMCA, along with its many community partners, has been addressing this important issue since its inception over 100 years ago.
In 2016, the Raritan Bay Area YMCA opened the Center for Support, Success and Prosperity, as part of its commitment to Social Responsibility, to directly address the issue of homelessness and its negative effects in our community. The Center strives to give immediate support to individuals living on the streets, hotels or insecure housing while working towards a long-term plan for prosperity. Funds raised at our 6th Annual Ending Homelessness Fundraiser are critical in helping us continue with these efforts.
In 2021, over 8,000 individuals experienced homelessness in New Jersey according to the state’s annual Point-in-Time Survey. The Point-in-Time count is held in January when the average low temperature in Middlesex County falls to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Code Blue Alerts are issued when temperatures fall below freezing and present a danger to life. The Y’s Center for Support, Success and Prosperity in conjunction with the Perth Amboy Police Department participates as a Code Blue shelter for the homeless.
Despite these numbers, we have made incredible progress in reducing the levels of homelessness in our County. The YMCA is part of an effort to end family homelessness in our community in just in less than 2 years from now (Dec 2024)!
