Join us as we dedicate six newly installed headstones at the Fort Caspar cemetery in honor of five soldiers of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry and one soldier of the 7th Iowa Cavalry who died while in service at the fort in 1865 and 1866. Their bodies have been lost to the prairie and these headstones are their only markers.The short ceremony will begin at 9:00 am and feature remarks from FCMA Vice President Johanna Wickman, who is spearheading this project, followed by remarks by James A. Hessler, noted Gettysburg expert and Civil War historian. Members of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry reenacting organization will be on hand and feature a bugler who will play taps, while members of the American Legion and United Veterans Council will provide military honors for the fallen soldiers.
This event is free to attend and open to all. It will take place at the "Lest We Forget" Commemorative Cemetery on the Fort Caspar grounds. To learn more about the cemetery project that will include 64 headstones when complete and to donate, please visit: https://www.fortcaspar.org/cemetery
