About this Event
The 5th Quarter Arranger Clinic is a high-impact, educational experience designed to develop the next generation of music arrangers at the high school and collegiate level. Hosted by 5th Quarter, the clinic brings together a select group of elite arrangers to provide participants with real-world insight into the art and process of writing for marching band and contemporary ensembles.
Throughout the session, featured arrangers will break down one of their original works, walking participants through their creative approach, including musical decision-making, voicing, orchestration, stylistic choices, and how to effectively write for specific ensembles. The clinic emphasizes both foundational concepts and advanced techniques, giving students a clear understanding of the gap between entry-level writing and professional-level arranging.
Participants will gain exposure to:
- Practical arranging strategies for marching band and stand performance
- Effective scoring and voicing for balance, power, and clarity
- The role of music theory in modern arranging styles (including HBCU band traditions)
- Creative risk-taking and developing a unique arranging voice
- Industry expectations and pathways to becoming a professional arranger
Designed to be both inspiring and instructional, the clinic challenges students to elevate their skillset while providing them with tools, knowledge, and perspective to grow as composers and arrangers. This experience also creates valuable networking opportunities between aspiring arrangers and established professionals in the field.
