Tuesday night we come together to dance, to sweat and to celebrate life. The body is the temple and the dance is the prayer. We dive deep into the beat of the music and follow our feet through the rhythms to become present, embodied, and alive.
To sweat is to pray, to make an offering of your innermost self. Sweat is holy water, prayer beads, pearls of liquid that release your past. Sweat is an ancient and universal form of self healing, whether done in the gym, the sauna, or the sweat lodge. The more you dance, the more you sweat. The more you sweat, the more you pray. The more you pray, the closer you come to ecstasy. ~ Gabrielle Roth
What is „Sweat Your Prayers®“?
Sweat your Prayers is an ecstatic dance space, a practice ground for experienced dancers who long to dive deeper into their dance.
It’s a session held with soulful music and with minimal instructions. Here you can immerse yourself into your own dance and your own somatic exploration.
While there is no teaching of the 5Rhythms practice, the session has a a clear intent and form. We move through the rhythms of flowing - staccato - chaos - lyrical - stillness, guided by the connection to our body, breath and spirit.
Beginners are welcome - basic knowledge of conscious dance practice and etiquette is expected. To upgrade your 5Rhythms practice, visit Julia Mercurio’s Thursday classes.
Guidelines:
1) Arrive on time
Doors close at 19:20 to create a safe spacer everyone.
2) Skip talking during the session
Experience the fullness of embodiment through movement, not through words. Let the need for talking and chitchatting go.
3) No phones / cameras
This is a sacred space in which we come together to become more present. Phones and cameras take the preciousness away and are distracting for everyone. Please keep your phone switched off, tucked away in your bag, do not shazaam the music, and refrain from filming or photographing during the session.
4) Surrender to movement
The golden key to this embodiment practice is to keep moving. That means to stay engaged in movement during the session. Whatever is going on for you, pleasant or unpleasant, you can physically express it! Any kind of sensations and emotions can appear - bring them into movement, and give it a shape. There is no right or wrong way to move. Let yourself follow your inner guidance. If you feel the need to rest, you can go slower, sit on a chair or simply rest, while at the same time staying engaged with the dance.
5) Turn up sober
This is a space in which we seek ecstasy through the body’s natural movement. If you have consumed alcohol, drugs, or other mind altering substances, please come at another occasion, when you can be more fully present.
6) Get consent for touch
Touch might happen spontaneously and naturally as part of dancing together. However, it might also not be enjoyed by some. Please always get consent and listen to your partners subtle or not so subtle indications of whether touch is welcome or not. Learn how to clearly say yes and no. Always respect a no.
What is 5Rhythms®?
The 5Rhythms® is a simple, powerful somatic movement meditation that anyone can practise - no matter of age, size, or physical ability. There are no steps to follow, no choreography to learn, no way to do it wrong. The only requirement is a breathing body and a curious mind.
Gabrielle Roth’s dynamic practice helps us to ease out of the head and into our body, connecting us deeper to our authenticity and our body’s inherent wisdom and power.
Wherever the 5Rhythms® are practiced, creativity, connection, and community are ignited.
About the teacher
Julia Mercurio is is a certified 5Rhythms® teacher with over 12 years of dancing experience. She has trained with Gabrielle Roth’s son Jonathan Horan, head of 5Rhythms Global in New York. With sensitivity and well chosen music, Julia creates space to free the body and explore the deeper layers of the soul. She holds a Masters of Art in Intercultural communication, and has trained in different somatic practices, including CoreSoma. The space she holds offers a journey through different energies - from nourishing, to focussed, over ecstatic to playful and sacred. A core theme of her teaching is how to truly fall in love with ourselves and how to use embodiment as a natural resource for healing.
„For me the sweats are a place where I have the freedom to move freely and truly meet myself on a deeper level. And I think that Julia is 3 in 1 - a 5Rhythms teacher, a DJ and a soul guide.“ - Annie, participant
