5 Things You Need to Know About Smoking Cessation

Course Description:
This course will discuss the consequences of smoking to oral and general health ant the types of tobacco currently in use. The physiological and habit components of smoking and interventions for smoking cessation will be discussed, including multiple brief interventions suitable for use in a dental office. Health benefits of quitting smoking and pharmacological treatments for smoking cessation will also be discussed.

Meet the Speaker: Dr. Deborah Franklin
Deborah Franklin, DDS, MA, LPC, CTTS MA - Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology LPC - Licensed Professional Counselor
CTTS - Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist
Dr. Franklin is an Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and Dental Public Health at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. Dr. Franklin earned her DDS at Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, Penn. She earned a Master of Arts in clinical psychology from The University of Houston Clear Lake in 1998 and is licensed as a professional counselor. Dr. Franklin has been certified as an American Cancer Society Fresh Start Smoking Cessation Program Facilitator since 2006 and is a certified mediator. She received the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award at UT School of Dentistry for five years in a row and is a member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology.
Course Topics & Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the health benefits of quitting smoking.
• List types of combustible nicotine delivery systems.
• List types of non-combustible nicotine delivery system
• Compare the toxicity of nicotine to that of combustion products from smoking.

REGISTRATION CANCELLATION: Tuition is refundable if a course is canceled by the Office of CE. A $50 fee will be assessed for any course cancellation. All payments by check or cash are deposited into the Texas A&M University account and CANNOT be refunded. “No Shows” for a course forfeit all tuition. Confirm notification of cancellation by e-mail. The CE Office cannot be held responsible for a non-refundable airline ticket.
