About this Event
With Benjamin we will have one of the founders of five-thirty type club back at letterspace. Thanks to the support of Stimulieringsfonds, he converted his stencil and doodle centric type workshops into a fully automated foundry. He also just released a publication, documenting these workshops and the resulting typefaces. We hope to be able to produce a collaborative typeface and see it being added to the collection in real-time.

Benjamin McMillan is a graphic designer and typeface ‘constructor’, from the UK but living and working in Amsterdam. Working frequently with and on magazines such as Tubelight, MacGuffin, and Metropolis M; and constantly on typefaces and type/lettering workshops. Since graduating from ArtEZ in 2020 he has run the open source type foundry, Full Auto.
—
Full Auto, a workshop-based type foundry that explores how digital automation and analogue tools can influence the design and methodology of letterforms and ultimately typefaces. Using analogue tools, participants are encouraged to draw letterforms without thinking too much about what the letter should be. Absent-minded drawing or doodling replaces thought-out design, leading to alphabets quickly (sometimes slowly) emerging from the repetition of mark-making. The quality, in a traditional sense, of these letterforms becomes less important than the quantity of them; quantity becomes quality. Outcomes vary in beauty and ugliness, smoothness and roughness. The sketches that participants produce are scanned and then go through a process of digital automation: vectorised, imported into FontForge, exported as both a .TTF and a .WOFF file and finally uploaded to the foundry’s website.
