About this Event
40 strong is an art exhibition featuring 40 life-casting chest sculptures of different women from the ages of 22-87. It aims to offer an opportunity for discussion about women, and how we see ourselves (and others) through the lens of our changing bodies/realistic expectations of aging. Each of these women have had different experience within the (patriarchal, colonial, medical and capitalist) structures in which we live, and yet they are all very similar struggles that stem from social media, film/tv, body trauma, broken medical & research systems. With the pressures to be a multifaceted women, we are simultaneously praised and demonized for everything we do while attempting to find our own authenticity. Witness the beauty & depth of expression that explores the perception of a woman’s form.
This work has been created and presented on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Attawandaron and Wendat peoples. I’m ever-grateful to learn and create on Turtle Island. I do my best to create art in a way that welcomes, includes and advocates for LGBTQIA+, BIPOC peoples and humans who live with disabilities. Choice of masking is supported at the event to support those who are most vulerable.
