To celebrate our anniversary, we are challenging our supporters to join us on our very own 40-kilometre walk along the River Thames.
About this Event

Able Child works toward a world in which no child with a disability is left behind. For 40 years we have been making lasting change for children with disabilities in Africa.

The challenge

To celebrate our anniversary, we are challenging our supporters to join us on our very own 40-kilometre walking challenge along the banks of the famous River Thames.

Starting in Kingston and continuing upriver, the route will pass through some of the most picturesque landmarks the capital’s towpath offers including Bushey Park, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.

As you near the finish line, the castle will be a prominent feature and your challenge will end – with fanfare – by Eton and Windsor Riverside.

What to expect

  • A covered start point to set you on your way
  • Multiple rest stops with free food and drink
  • A medal, t-shirt and finisher’s reception to celebrate

The fundraising

Everything we do is to ensure that no child with a disability is left behind. That’s why we have set an ambitious but achievable team target of £40,000. Sounds big, but all that means is each of our 40 walkers raising £1,000 each.

You will be supported every step of the way

A dedicated Able Child contact who will provide you with unlimited support

  • Regular communications from our fundraising team with guides, tips and best practice on getting those donations
  • Resources and materials to help you publicise your challenge and the help you need
  • We want to support more children with disabilities, and your fundraising will help us do exactly that.

So join our 40 for 40 Challenge now to ensure that we are able to keep supporting children with disabilities in Africa for another 40 years and beyond.

Our Story

Nearly 29 million children in Eastern and Southern Africa are living with a disability.

These children are more likely to be living in poverty. They are four times more likely to experience physical violence or sexual assault, and twice as likely to never attend school.

They are being forgotten, hidden and left behind.

Denying children with disabilities their equal rights can have a lifelong impact. It leads to a life of poverty, dependence and abuse.

Able Child exists to change this.

We work towards a world in which no child with a disability is left behind.

We support a network of African organisations to protect, educate and amplify the voices of children and young people with disabilities.

Together, we work across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe breaking down barriers to inclusion so that children with disabilities are able to thrive.

Every child has the right to feel safe; the right to an education; and the right to be heard.

Because all children are able.
