About this Event
April Dates:
This is a 4 week class running on consecutive Thursday nights. It will meet from 6-8:30pm on April 17, 24, May 1, and May 8.
Ready to make a chair of your own? Join this Rebuilding Exchange Workshop to explore the opportunities of salvage and reuse in designing a new-to-you chair. This is a design/build workshop, so we’ll all be coming together to provide design feedback and share our sketches as we go through the process. Tools that could be used during the workshop include the bandsaw, router table, drill press, drills, hammers, prybars, chopsaw, chisels, sander, glue and clamps, wood stain and other finishing materials.
Week 1: We’ll talk about chair design and construction, check out the existing chair inventory at the Rebuilding Exchange, and begin the harvesting process to selectively deconstruct the existing materials, and prepare them for your chair’s construction.
Week 2: We’ll be focusing on joinery and hardware, preparing the joints and brackets that will be needed to assemble your chair as a steady and reliable support. As you work with the material, we’ll update the design as needed.
Week 3: This week will be all about assembly and glue up, ensuring that all of your joints are ready to be connected and set, and then getting them clamped up for a final assembly.
Week 4: Finishing. This week is sanding, staining, oiling and finishing and any other final touches that are needed!
