About James Mahone
James Mahone, a saxophonist and composer, embarked on his musical journey nearly 30 years ago in Monterey, California. His influences were deeply rooted in the city’s rich music scene. He pursued classical and jazz saxophone studies at California State University Northridge, working with notable instructors like Bill Caulkins. James became a fixture in the Los Angeles music scene and joined the acclaimed jazz quintet Black Note, recording albums for Columbia and GRP/Impulse labels. His performances spanned the West Coast, national stages, and international jazz festivals. In New York City, he studied under renowned musicians like Garry Dial, Billy Harper, Benny Powell, and Charles Tolliver. James continued his career in Tokyo, Japan, refining his skills as a performer and recording artist. He’s sought after throughout Japan and has taught saxophone, clarinet, and flute.
