За френския художник Аксел Морел работата по изложбата 4 HANDS | mirror започва преди две години, когато той придобива малка рисунка на Валентина Траянова. На нея художничката е нарисувала момиченце с череп вместо глава — едновременно плашеща и вълнуваща, самотна фигура.
„За мен в тази рисунка нямаше нищо плашещо. Напротив — тя събуди нещо дълбоко познато: образ на онзи крехък, преходен етап, когато юношеството размива границите на идентичността“, казва художникът.
В желанието си да опредмети своя диалог с творбата, Морел създава нейна реплика в техниката, в която работи — бродерия върху плат. Макар и със същия образ, рисунката се превръща в нещо различно — в напълно ново произведение, в диалог между двама художници. Така се ражда идеята за проекта 4 HANDS | mirror, в който той създава огледални бродерийни версии на творби на художници, чиито произведения го вълнуват. Често те засягат теми като интимността и границите, поставени от идентичността и тялото.
Поемайки ролята на куратор, Аксел Морел подбира и кани авторите, проучва тяхната художествена практика в търсене на най-добрия начин тя да бъде представена чрез средствата на бродерията и текстила. Неговите огледални бродерии не са просто механично преповтаряне на първоизточника с други средства, а форма на задълбочен и въздействащ диалог. В изложбата в „Литъл Бърд“ са включени 12 произведения на художници от България, Франция, Канада, Афганистан, Италия и Тайланд, като оригиналните творби са представени редом с бродираните интерпретации на художника.
Основното тук не е търсенето на точно възпроизвеждане на оригинала, а неговата огледална деконструкция, при която образът съдържа мисли и преживявания, свързани както с творбата, така и с нейния автор.
В същото време изборът на толкова необичайна техника, каквато е бродерията позволява различно навлизане в полето на избрания художник. Бродерията има свое извънвременно художествено присъствие — тя е едновременно древна и съвременна. Интерпретацията на конкретно произведение чрез тази техника придава почти свещен статус на творбата. Връща ни към традицията на ювелирното изкуство, към бродираните ритуални дрехи, напомняйки за красотата на ръчния труд, изискващ време и познание, които съвременният свят все по-често губи.
Аксел Морел е френски артист, базиран в Европа и живеещ в България. Той изследва границите между скулптурата и обемната бродерия, развивайки уникален художествен подход, който съчетава традиция и иновация. Завършил Métiers d'Art, той започва кариерата си като сценограф на костюми в Опера Бастилия в Париж, като паралелно изследва скулптурата във всичките ѝ форми. Обучава се и в златна бродерия, което обогатява техническия му арсенал. В своята работа Аксел Морел надхвърля традиционните скулптурни техники, интегрирайки бродерията в триизмерни структури — както фигуративни, така и абстрактни. Този иновативен подход създава произведения, в които нишката се издига отвъд повърхността, формирайки органични, динамични и въздействащи форми.

For the French artist Axel Morel, work on the exhibition 4 HANDS | mirror began two years ago, when he acquired a small drawing by Valentina Trayanova. In it, the artist had drawn a little girl with a skull instead of a head — a solitary figure, at once unsettling and compelling.
“For me, there was nothing frightening in this drawing. On the contrary — it awakened something deeply familiar: the image of that fragile, transitional stage when adolescence blurs the boundaries of identity,” says the artist.
In his desire to give material form to his dialogue with the work, Morel created a replica of it in the technique in which he works — embroidery on fabric. Though it carries the same image, the drawing becomes something different — an entirely new work, a dialogue between two artists. This is how the idea for the project 4 HANDS | mirror was born, in which he creates mirrored embroidered versions of works by artists whose art moves him. They often address themes such as intimacy and the boundaries imposed by identity and the body.
Taking on the role of curator, Axel Morel selects and invites the artists, studying their practices in search of the best way for them to be presented through the means of embroidery and textile. His mirrored embroideries are not simply a mechanical repetition of the source work through other means, but a form of deep and compelling dialogue. The exhibition at Little Bird Place includes 12 works by artists from Bulgaria, France, Canada, Afghanistan, Italy, and Thailand, with the original works presented alongside the artist’s embroidered interpretations.
What matters here is not the pursuit of an exact reproduction of the original, but its mirrored deconstruction, in which the image contains thoughts and experiences connected both to the work and to its author.
At the same time, the choice of a technique as unusual as embroidery allows for a different entry into the field of the selected artist. Embroidery has its own timeless artistic presence — it is both ancient and contemporary. The interpretation of a specific work through this technique gives the work an almost sacred status. It takes us back to the tradition of the jeweller’s art, to embroidered ritual garments, reminding us of the beauty of manual labour, which requires time and knowledge that the contemporary world is increasingly losing.
Axel Morel is a French artist based in Europe and living in Bulgaria. He explores the boundaries between sculpture and three-dimensional embroidery, developing a unique artistic approach that combines tradition and innovation. A graduate of Métiers d’Art, he began his career as a costume scenographer at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, while at the same time exploring sculpture in all its forms. He also trained in gold embroidery, enriching his technical repertoire. In his work, Axel Morel goes beyond traditional sculptural techniques, integrating embroidery into three-dimensional structures — both figurative and abstract. This innovative approach creates works in which thread rises beyond the surface, forming organic, dynamic, and striking forms.

Pour l’artiste français Axel Morel, le travail sur l’exposition 4 HANDS | mirror commence il y a deux ans, lorsqu’il acquiert un petit dessin de Valentina Trayanova. L’artiste y a représenté une petite fille avec un crâne à la place de la tête — une figure solitaire, à la fois inquiétante et fascinante.
« Pour moi, il n’y avait rien d’effrayant dans ce dessin. Au contraire — il a réveillé quelque chose de profondément familier : l’image de cette étape fragile et transitoire où l’adolescence brouille les frontières de l’identité », dit l’artiste.
Désireux de donner une forme matérielle à son dialogue avec l’œuvre, Morel en crée une réplique dans la technique qui lui est propre — la broderie sur textile. Bien qu’elle reprenne la même image, le dessin devient autre chose — une œuvre entièrement nouvelle, un dialogue entre deux artistes. C’est ainsi que naît l’idée du projet 4 HANDS | mirror, dans lequel il crée des versions brodées en miroir d’œuvres d’artistes dont les travaux le touchent profondément. Celles-ci abordent souvent des thèmes tels que l’intimité et les limites imposées par l’identité et le corps.
Assumant le rôle de commissaire, Axel Morel sélectionne et invite les artistes, étudiant leurs pratiques à la recherche de la meilleure manière de les présenter à travers les moyens de la broderie et du textile. Ses broderies en miroir ne sont pas une simple répétition mécanique de l’œuvre source par d’autres moyens, mais une forme de dialogue profond et saisissant. L’exposition présentée à Little Bird Place réunit 12 œuvres d’artistes de Bulgarie, de France, du Canada, d’Afghanistan, d’Italie et de Thaïlande, les œuvres originales étant présentées aux côtés des interprétations brodées de l’artiste.
L’enjeu n’est pas ici la recherche d’une reproduction exacte de l’original, mais sa déconstruction en miroir, dans laquelle l’image porte des pensées et des expériences liées à la fois à l’œuvre et à son auteur.
Dans le même temps, le choix d’une technique aussi singulière que la broderie permet une entrée différente dans le champ de l’artiste choisi. La broderie possède sa propre présence artistique hors du temps — elle est à la fois ancienne et contemporaine. L’interprétation d’une œuvre particulière à travers cette technique confère à l’œuvre un statut presque sacré. Elle nous ramène à la tradition de l’art joaillier, aux vêtements rituels brodés, nous rappelant la beauté du travail manuel, qui exige du temps et un savoir que le monde contemporain tend de plus en plus à perdre.
Axel Morel est un artiste français basé en Europe et vivant en Bulgarie. Il explore les frontières entre la sculpture et la broderie en volume, développant une approche artistique singulière qui conjugue tradition et innovation. Diplômé des Métiers d’Art, il débute sa carrière comme scénographe de costumes à l’Opéra Bastille à Paris, tout en explorant la sculpture sous toutes ses formes. Il se forme également à la broderie d’or, ce qui enrichit son arsenal technique. Dans son travail, Axel Morel dépasse les techniques sculpturales traditionnelles en intégrant la broderie à des structures tridimensionnelles — figuratives autant qu’abstraites. Cette approche innovante donne naissance à des œuvres dans lesquelles le fil s’élève au-delà de la surface, formant des formes organiques, dynamiques et saisissantes.
