Mozart's Eb Octet was written as a sextet in 1781, when he was 25 years old, for the court painter's sister in law, hoping to impress the Emperor. He later added two oboes for Prince Liechtenstein. It features dances of the day and was intended to be played outdoors. The octet was written to be performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
Carmen tells the story of a soldier who falls in love with a fiery Roma woman who is murdered. When it premiered in 1875, the year of Bizet's death in France, it received mixed reactions due to Carmen's wild and unethical behavior. It features vibrant Spanish styles and is now one of the most popular and beloved operas in the world. This arrangement by Graham Sheen, principal bassoonist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, is written for 10 instruments.
