The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society will gather in historic downtown DeLand on April 17–18, 2026, for its 37th Annual Conference, a weekend devoted to the life, work, and enduring influence of the Pulitzer Prize–winning author.Best known for The Yearling and her Florida memoir Cross Creek, Rawlings captured the people and landscapes of the state with uncommon clarity and affection. Each spring, the Society brings together scholars, teachers, writers, students, and devoted readers to explore her legacy, and the broader tradition of Florida literature she helped shape.
This year’s conference takes place at Northwest Square, 238 N. Clara Ave., in the heart of downtown DeLand, a walkable district known for its historic architecture, independent shops, and welcoming atmosphere. Sessions will range from literary analysis and historical perspectives to reflections on Florida’s natural heritage, along with film, music, and good food and conversation
designed to spark connection as well as scholarship. Conference highlights include:
- Geoff Gates on interpreting Florida’s landscapes as a park ranger
- Daniel Cook on Rawlings and World War II-era Florida
- Friday celebration of literature and music with Paul Garfinkel and Leslie Kemp Poole
- Saturday afternoon boat excursion at Blue Spring State Park
Founded in 1987, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society fosters scholarship and community among those interested in Rawlings’ writing and Florida’s literary and cultural history. Annual
gatherings move throughout the state, connecting place with story.
Students and first-time attendees are especially welcome. Whether long-time members or newly curious readers, participants share a common interest in thoughtful conversation, good writing, and the spirit of “old Florida” that Rawlings so memorably described.
Registration is open through April 2, 2026. Discounted hotel rates at the Courtyard DeLand Historic Downtown are available for reservations made by March 17.
