The Friends of Portsdown Hill began 30 years ago with three simple aims; to preserve the character, wildlife and recreational value of Portsdown Hill, to promote public awareness and understanding, and to support the Portsdown Hill Countryside Service. The current Countryside Officer Richard Jones was a volunteer then and has since been in post for much of that time. Who better to look back on how things have changed over three decades, from those overgrown slopes favoured for off-road biking and the torching of stolen cars, to the magnificent species-rich chalk grassland that we enjoy now? Portsdown Hill today is the product of his vision, and hosts a vibrant community of users as an oasis on the urban fringe.
