What is Structured Literacy and how do we include Multisensory learning in our class? It is a common misconception that learning to read is an easy and natural process; however, learning to read requires explicit, sequential and systematic instruction which targets the essential components of reading. Structured Literacy and Multisensory learning supports the learning for all learners. This workshop aims to support foundation phase teachers and therapists in exploring the best practices and strategies when implementing Structured Literacy in the classroom. The presenters will walk you through our Bellavista Grade 1 phonics programme, specifically looking at how sequential, explicit and multisensory instruction benefits all children. As well as foundation phase scope & sequence, heart words and orthographic mapping; explicit spelling rules & patterns, sound walls and decodable texts, based on the Science of Reading research and how the brain learns to read. We will also look at incorporating games into teaching literacy as well as how using various apps meaningfully is key to integrate technology across the curriculum in the Foundation Phase classroom.
