About this Event
Encaustic bowl vessels
"Vessel, for carrying something precious and unique, a treasure which should be protected and adored"
You will play explore and dive deep into the world of discovery using encaustic wax as your medium. This is a beginning journey into three dimensional encaustic forms! We are taking encaustic off the flat panel surface and diving in to exploring it's dimensional possibilities! In this workshop you will learn a liberating process of:
- Texturing
- Layering
- Building up and scraping back
- You will explore mark-making techniques
- Wax applications
- Incising and inlaying
- Explore color and create depth through use of pigmented wax, pigment sticks and glazing techniques
- You will incorporate thread, tissue papers, metallic and gold leaf into your vessel. Discover how to incorporate images into your art piece
Participants will go home with one original bowl vessel and are encouraged to bring ephemera, and old and handmade papers to incorporate into your work.
What Is Encaustic?
Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the natural beeswax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer
Small class allows for one-on-one teaching
