About this Event
Encaustic Fine Art Photo Workshop
Searching to add more visual interest in your work, want to create something that makes your heart sing?
Of course my approach is intuitive, as it is with all of my classes. In this way, your heart begins to tell its own story without the need to be overt or overly concerned if the viewer experiences the final work through the lens of their own life experiences. Students will combine photographic imagery with collage and encaustic painting to create an alchemy of textural and impactful.
Each student will receive a personalized editing session for a visual narrative and select images that will work best in a composition. design and color pallet. The workshop will focus on collage and encaustic painting techniques, you will be encouraged to think creatively, symbolically, and intuitively. Students will learn about the rich history of encaustic painting and the versatility of working with wax. Amanda will demonstrate many techniques for putting pieces together and then layering to build up the surface of your composition to create a textural work of mixed media art, including image transfers, transferring your images on tissue paper and embedding them into warm wax! Tools such as encaustic iron, stylus and mark making objects will be available to add texture and dimension to your piece, you will learn how to use fabrics as an embossing element! When to gold leaf, how to patina, dry rubs and so much more!!!
What Is Encaustic?
Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in '' Heat is used throughout the process, from melting 100% pure beeswax and damar resin (crystallized tree sap). An ancient Egyptian technique, the famous Fayum Mummy Portraits, created 1st Century A.D., were placed over a mummy as a memorial, and had impressive details of realistic facial features. Many of the Fayum have survived to today, and their color is still fresh and beautiful. The durability of encaustic is because beeswax is impervious to moisture. So they do not deteriorate, yellow, or darken!
The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer
