Love brings together artworks that approach love obliquely — through moments such as connection, tension, memory, and quiet presence. Across diverse materials and visual languages, artists explore love as something shaped through time, labor, vulnerability, and perception. This exhibit invites viewers to enjoy how art reveals love in unexpected ways.
Experience Love in all its complexity in Gallery 1337 at Art Works Downtown, February 7–March 21.

Celebrating 29 Years Art of the African Diaspora is the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area. For 29 years it has supported hundreds of artists of African descent through representation, professional development and building a creative community. This year over 130 artists showcase their work at the Richmond Art Center, as well as in open studios and satellite exhibitions at over thirty different venues across the Bay Area.
Art of the African Diaspora originated from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black that was organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway. In 1996 artists Jan Hart-Schuyers and Rae Louise Hayward, influenced by Calloway, established the exhibition The Art of Living Black at the Richmond Art Center. After the deaths of Hart-Schuyers and Hayward, organizing efforts were carried on for many years by their families. Today, with a new name to reflect a new era, Art of the African Diaspora is organized by a steering committee of participating artists.

Damon Powell is an Artist & Theologian who currently resides in Emeryville, California. Damon received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute, his Master of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU). After obtaining his BFA, he began a career as a professional illustrator and free-lance artist. However, upon entering seminary Dr. Powell’s theological studies helped him to understand that his visual artistry was an integral part of his vocation and ongoing spiritual practice.
Damon’s time at the GTU helped him discover ways he could integrate his theological insights and creative artistry into a cohesive way of being which combines, theology, art, aesthetics, and his ongoing spiritual practice into an overarching vocational vision. Today, Damon’s creations are based upon insights gained through his research of theological and philosophical texts, meditation practice, and spiritual concepts that he gives visual expression through the use of color, line, symbol and prose.
