Join us October 25th from 10-12 for presentations on Seed Saving for Children, Creating Beauty with Seed Heads and Seed Saving for Habitat Restoration and Conservation.
After the presentations, spend some time at our information tables discovering different types of seed storage, hands-on seed cleaning techniques, collecting and saving seeds to assure that they are viable the following year and why proper seed packet labeling is so very important, and speak with some of the presenters to have your questions answered. Lastly participants can take a walk with us through a Berks Nature wildflower garden. See in person how to determine if a seed head is ready for collection and how to collect seeds on the go.

The importance of seed saving helps to preserve biodiversity and ensures the resilience of our food systems. By saving seeds from year to year, gardeners maintain a wide variety of plant species, many of which are adapted to specific local climates and soils. This diversity helps protect against pests, diseases, and changing environmental conditions. Culturally, seed saving carries deep historical and ancestral significance. Many seeds are tied to cultural identity, traditional cuisines, and spiritual practices. Passing down seeds from generation to generation helps preserve this heritage, ensuring that the stories, flavors, and knowledge associated with them are not lost. In this way, seed saving is not just an agricultural practice, but also a form of cultural preservation and resistance.

Additionally, saving native plant seeds is crucial for preserving local ecosystems and supporting genetic biodiversity. Native plants have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in specific regions, adapting to local soils, climates, and relationships with wildlife such as pollinators, birds, and insects. By saving and replanting their seeds, we help maintain these delicate ecological balances, ensuring that native species continue to play their essential roles in sustaining healthy environments.
