What is International Meatless Day?
International Meatless Day is observed every year on 25th November the birth anniversary of Sadhu T.L. Vaswani who dedicated his life to the ideal of Reverence for All Life. He appealed to humanity to stop hurting and killing animals. The day was launched in 1986 as a gentle invitation to choose compassion by going meatless.
Why is Meatless Day observed?
The day honours Sadhu Vaswani’s message of kindness and reminds us of the unseen pain animals endure. It encourages each one of us to make a small conscious choice—a single meat-free day—that can help build a more humane and sustainable world.
The choice also carries a very real impact on the Earth:
One day of plant-based eating helps lower greenhouse gas emissions even at an individual level: in a recent survey food-related GHG emissions dropped by about 52.9% when meat-free days were observed.
- Choosing plant-based meals conserves water a resource the world is struggling to protect. The global average water footprint for meat production is ~ 15400 litres per kg
- Reduced demand for meat slows deforestation helping safeguard forests and the countless species that depend on them. (In a recent study expansion of pasture land for cattle accounts for 41% of tropical deforestation.)
- Choosing plant-based meals helps protect global climate systems as livestock uses nearly 80% of the world’s agricultural land weakening the Earth’s natural climate buffers.
How you can be part of it:
On 25th November we invite everyone to go meatless for the day and support a world where no being suffers for our food.
