The Walk of Remembrance celebrates Monterey's pioneering fishing community and the impact the residents and their descendants have had on California's Central Coast and beyond. We invite you to join us for a day of joy and learning as we pay tribute to these incredible members of our community.
NOTE:
All events are free and open to the public. Most events do not require advance registration, but do have limited capapcity. We encourage you to come early to make sure you have a spot. The Chinese/Whalers Cabin tour at Pt. Lobos on Sunday does require pre-registration due to extremely limited space.

Chinese Fishing Village Exhibit

This exhibit, created by California State University, Monterey Bay Museum Studies intern Marisa Mercado, presents the history of the Point Alones Chinese fishing village. In 2012, two years after Mercado developed informational panels that detail the history of the Chinese Fishing Village, artist Michael Croft used those panels to build a miniature diorama reconstruction of the historic location. The exhibit was recently expanded. Stop by the museum between 11 AM and noon when Michael will be available to answer questions about his work.

Join us for a panel discussion and video about the rich history of Chinese people on the Monterey Peninsula. Learn how diverse people in the natural environment of Pacific Grove have contributed to enrich our lives and how we can continue the stewardship of the planet from traditions of the past. Learn more about the Walk of Remembrance and its founder, Gerry Low Sabado, and how in the face of adversity she pursued change with kindness.

Please join us for the main event, a one mile walk from Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to Stanford University Hopkins Marine Station, site of the Point Alones Chinese Fishing Village before it was mysteriously burned to the ground In 1906. This act displaced hundreds of Chinese from their homes and livelihoods, as they lost all of their worldly possessions. We will gather in front of the museum for the Monterey Bay Lion Dance Troop performance, then walk 1 mile via the Coastal Recreation Trail to the Chinese fishing village site where Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station now stands. At the end of the walk, there will be a talk on Tuck Lee at Hopkins Boatworks lecture hall.

Born in 1866 in the fishing village of Point Lobos, Tuck Lee was among the first Chinese Americans to cast a vote in Monterey County. In addition to Chinese, he was fluent in both Spanish and English. After spending many years in the Point Alones fishing village, Tuck earned a reputation as the most sought-after fisherman in the community. He was highly regarded by scientists at Stanford University’s Hopkins Seaside Laboratory, playing a crucial role in gathering their important scientific specimens. Presentation by Donald Kohrs, Branch Library Specialist at the Henry A Miller Library of Stanford University Hopkins Marine Station.

Chinese/Whalers Cabin Tours

We will gather with descendants and friends at the place where it all began, Point Lobos State Nature Reserve, the location of the first Chinese-American family settlement in the United States . The Whalers Cabin was built by the Chinese In the 1850s. Join us for a tour with Point Lobos Foundation docents. Parking is limited. Tours will be given on a first-come-first-served basis. Light refreshments will be provided.
