2026 Vermont Bicycle Mechanic Training for Retail Service

A collaboration by the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance and Vermont bike shops.

Attendance at all 5 sessions is required:

  • Session 1: Monday, April 6th, 6:30pm-8:30pm @Tygart Mountain Sports
  • Session 2: Wednesday, April 8th, 6:30pm-8:30pm @Tygart Mountain Sports
  • Session 3: Monday, April 13th, 6:30pm-8:30pm @Base Camp
  • Session 4: Wednesday, April 15th, 6:30pm-8:30pm @Base Camp
  • Session 5: Friday, April 17th, 6:30pm-8:30pm @Base Camp

Do you currently work in retail service or are you seeking employment this spring as an entry-level mechanic?

This 10-hour training provides a full overview of bicycle mechanic fundamentals rooted in the Park Tool School curriculum modified for Vermont-specific service. Learning covers a range of assembly, repair, and maintenance topics combining instruction from experienced Vermont bike shop mechanics with hands-on practice.

Training Modules:

  • Bike Anatomy, Common Bicycle Standards, and Tube/Tire Change Procedure
  • Set-Up and Adjustment of Common Front and Rear Derailleurs
  • Set-up and Adjustment of Caliper Rim and Mechanical Disc Brakes
  • Wheel Truing and Hub Bearing Adjustment, Headset + Bottom Bracket Bearings
  • Service Writing Overview, Shop Workflow, and Final Concepts Check

The training is administered by the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance. The curriculum is designed and instructed by lead mechanics from Vermont bike shops.

Details:

  • Must attend all 5 sessions to receive the VOBA Bicycle Mechanic Training for Retail Service Certificate of Completion
  • Locations vary (see above)
  • Class size: 6-8; 2 instructors per session
  • Apply by March 27 at 12pm EST
  • Registration does not guarantee admission to the cohort. Confirmation of acceptance will be emailed March 31 by 2pm EST

Eligibility:

  • Priority will be given to those currently employed by a Vermont shop or those planning to apply for a mechanic position in a Vermont shop this spring.
  • Priority will be given to under-represented communities in the occupation in Vermont (women, BIPOC, LGBTQ, New Americans, persons with disabilities, etc.)

Should I take the training?

The training is ideal for the following audiences:

  • Bike mechanics who want a refresh on the fundamentals heading into the 2026 service season;
  • Individuals who are committed to starting work as a bike mechanic in a VT shop this season, are seeking employment, and are willing to practice what they learn;
  • Experienced bike mechanics interested in learning more efficient ways of doing the basics.

The training is not for:

  • Bike mechanics who are seeking advanced skills training;
  • Aspiring or current bike mechanics who are not seeking employment this coming season;
  • Individuals who are seeking training for personal application.
