About this Event
Health Leaders Summer Academy (HLSA) – Program Overview
The Health Leaders Summer Academy (HLSA) is sponsored by the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine (COM), Office of Access, Belonging & Community Engagement. This is an immersive summer experience designed for high school students entering grades 10–12 who are passionate about pursuing careers in Medicine (Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) ), or one of the Health Science professions (Nursing, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Athletic Training, Social Work, Kinesiology, Public Health, etc.).
HLSA aims to empower students, especially those from low-income or under-resourced communities, or first‑generation college families by helping them explore future educational pathways and connect with healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds and specialties.
Throughout the program, students will:
- Learn about health‑focused academic tracks and programs at UCF
- Tour university campuses, labs, and medical facilities
- Participate in hands‑on activities that spark interest in healthcare and research
- Build confidence and clarity around their long‑term academic and career goals
Full scholarships are available for families who can provide government documentation of financial need, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation.
- Dr. Michael J.L. Smith, Academy Director
