Join us for this year’s Practical Aerobatic Judging class on Saturday, February 28! Whether you’re a current competitor, new to aerobatics, or simply interested in supporting the sport, this seminar is a great opportunity to learn, connect, and help strengthen our chapter. If you are not yet an IAC Judge, this is your chance to get involved. It takes dedicated volunteers and qualified judges to hold successful contests, and our chapter—like many across the country—needs more judges to keep events running smoothly. Even if you’re “just” a competitor, this class will give valuable insight into how figures are evaluated and why scores aren’t always “10s.” The more you understand the judging process, the better competitor you’ll become.
Before attending, those who have not yet completed any aerobatic judge training should visit the IAC website at iac.org, select the Judge dropdown menu, and complete the Courses and Seminars videos along with the accompanying Knowledge Quizzes. These are quick and easy to complete and will provide a solid foundation in reading Aresti diagrams and understanding how figures are graded. Every aerobatic pilot—and anyone interested in judging—should have this basic knowledge.
The chapter truly needs members to step up and volunteer as aerobatic judges. All IAC contests are experiencing a shortage of judges, and you do not have to be a pilot to become one. Training is provided. While many judges are Intermediate competitors, this often creates shortages when Intermediate categories are flying. Sportsman competitors can absolutely become judges, and Advanced and Unlimited competitors are strongly encouraged to complete judge training as well.
The official 2026 IAC Contest Rules are now available on the IAC website. The updated PDF includes change bars highlighting revised rules for this season. Notable updates include changes to Starter duties, Contest Jury procedures, and late arrival penalties. To excel in the “game” of competition aerobatics—just like any sport—reading the rulebook at least once is highly recommended.
Come learn, volunteer, and help support the future of aerobatic competition.
We hope to see you on February 28!
Please register for the class by emailing Wes Liu.
