CLINIC - 2
Topic: “Lean Lessons Learned from World War II Paratroopers”
Presented by: Dr. Phil Rosenkrantz
SYNOPSIS:
This session explores how leadership, strategy, and team culture developed by General James Gavin and the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II found their way into and mirror the principles and practices of today’s most agile and resilient Lean enterprises.
During my 20-year search (1998-2018) for what happened to my uncle, Staff Sergeant David Rosenkrantz—a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division who was reported Missing in Action in World War II—I uncovered far more than historical records. I found timeless lessons in leadership, training, resilience, and values that speak directly to today’s challenges in building a culture of continuous improvement. All of this resulted in my book published in 2020: Letters from Uncle Dave: The 73-year Journey to Find a Missing-In-Action World War II Paratrooper.
Paratroopers operated under extreme uncertainty: high operational tempo, minimal communication, dispersed landings, and rapidly evolving missions. Their success was not accidental—it was the result of deliberate training, decentralized leadership, a clear sense of purpose, and deep alignment with mission and values.
Using historical insights and modern leadership theory, the presentation is structured around five key themes: 1. Building a purpose-driven culture aligned with mission and values. 2. Practicing servant leadership to build trust and engagement. 3. Using cross-training to create flexible, high-functioning teams. 4. Empowering decentralized decision-making and initiative-taking. 5. Embedding core values into day-to-day behaviors—even under pressure. This session offers a compelling look at how leadership forged in combat can inspire stronger teams and cultures of improvement today. For Lean leaders seeking new ways to build mission-ready, value-driven teams—this is your call to action.
