Japan Twang! Is an hour-long performance of “Tsugaru-jamisen” by Sato Michiyoshi. The event is sponsored by Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University's Soga Japan Center. Doors open at 4:30. The recital begins at 5 p.m. Free and open to the public.Tsugaru-jamisen is a modern, improvisatory, and often highly technical Japanese musical style performed on a three-stringed spike lute called a shamisen.
Sato’s performance will include a range of traditional folksong pieces, solo improvisation, and modern compositions with vocals and audience participation.
Translation and commentary will be provided by Joshua Lee Solomon of Hirosaki University, Japan.
The show will be at the Connable Recital Hall in Kalamazoo College's Light Fine Arts Building. The building is located at the northeastern corner of Thompson and Academy streets on the Kalamazoo College's campus.
Parking can be found in a lot on Thompson Street as well as on the adjoining streets. Street parking in the area is open to the public on weekends and after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
