Level I Course Description
The Level I course is intended for orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, engineers, orthotists, and anyone who treats children who have gait deviations. This course teaches introductory skills for analyzing gait and planning associated treatments. This course focuses on interpreting gait data and planning associated treatments for ambulatory children who have cerebral palsy.

Level I Course Objectives:

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography (EMG) patterns associated with typical gait.
  • Identify typical gait deviations associated with muscle tightness, bony deformities and tone issues for children who have cerebral palsy.
  • Explain the limitations of, and potential errors associated with, clinical gait analysis.
  • Demonstrate basic skills in interpreting gait analysis data.
  • Describe a corresponding treatment plan based on gait analysis data.

Level I CME Information:

Credit Designation: 20.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

Level II Course Description
The Level II course is intended for orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, engineers, orthotists, and anyone who treats children who have gait deviations. This course is designed for those who have experience in gait analysis who are ready to examine, in greater depth, the complexities of gait interpretation for children who have cerebral palsy. Teaching points in this course will be almost entirely based on clinical cases reviewed in small groups with some didactic lectures. This course focuses on interpreting gait data and planning associated treatments for ambulatory children who have cerebral palsy.

Level II Course Objectives:

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the influence of biomechanical modeling on the interpretation of gait data.
  • Describe the mechanical principles associated with pathologic gait due to cerebral palsy and myelomeningocele including crouch gait.
  • Apply a problem-identification approach to plan treatments based on gait analysis data for lever-arm dysfunction, contractures, spasticity, and crouch gait.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the dilemmas of foot models and data interpretation.
  • Describe more advanced motion analysis applications.

Level II CME Information:
