ABOUT BRONX INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY
Bronx Independent Bookstore Day was created by The Bronx is Reading to highlight the growth of indie bookstores in the Bronx from online, mobile, and pop-up shops to brick and mortar spaces. It’s important now more than ever to shop local and support literary culture in the Bronx. 2026 marks the 3rd annual celebration of bookstores that started in 2020!
ABOUT THE ANDREW FREEDMAN HOME
The historic Andrew Freedman Home, located on the Grand Concourse, was originally built in 1924 through a gift from Andrew Freedman to support New Yorkers facing hardship. It now stands at the forefront of a bold new vision. Today, the space is being redeveloped into a vibrant art and technology community hub, bringing together artists, innovators, and local residents through creative programming, workforce development, and hands-on learning. The venue also offers flexible event space for exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings, making it a dynamic destination for both creative expression and memorable events.
ABOUT BRONX BOUND BOOK
Bronx Bound Books, a bookstore on wheels leaves no community behind as they travel throughout the borough--especially to neighborhoods where it may be needed the most--to bring literature to the people.
ABOUT THE BRONX IS READING
Saraciea Fennell founded and organized The Bronx is Reading and the Bronx Book Festival in response to an overwhelming need for a visible literary space for Bronx residents, after the closing of the borough’s only bookstore in 2016. Following the success of the inaugural festival, which raised more than $35,000 on Kickstarter, Fennell has since continued to organize book events like The Bronx is Reading Book Club, a monthly book meet-up at the Andrew Freeman Home, the Bronx’s first Literary Crawl, to celebrate the vibrant literary community present in the borough, and most recently a pop-up and online bookstore. Sustaining momentum in cultivating an enthusiastic literary community, The Bronx is Reading looks to partner with other organizations and businesses with similar ideals. ABOUT NEFER BOOKCAFÉ
NEFER is an independent bookcafé. We encourage slowing down, wonder, curiosity, and deep thinking on topics that are worthy of who we are — the ones that give us courage to heal ourselves and others from the damage of grind culture and social divisions. We value ease. We're made up of liberated minds, critical thinkers, highly sensitive, rebellious people committed to nurturing identity, joy, and purpose through reading and conversations. Our spot, book clubs, workshops, lectures, and readings gently agitate and dislodge limiting and dehumanizing beliefs and push us to behave like we are capable of doing difficult things, believe we are necessary in this world, and love with, as, and for one another.
