When: Monday 3 – Friday 7 August 2026
Speaker:Andrew Atherstone
Topic: Anglican evangelicalism in the age of John Stott, Jim Packer and Dick Lucas: Surviving and thriving in a mixed-up denomination
Join us each morning from Monday 3 to Friday 7 August 2026 when Andrew Athersone, Professor of Modern Anglicanism at Oxford University, will be addressing the topic of Anglican evangelicalism in today’s church.
Is it possible to be an evangelical Christian with integrity in a mixed denomination like Anglicanism? What is the best strategy for propagating the gospel within the church? Should evangelicals focus on mission in their parishes and parachurch relationships, or embrace Anglican synods and collaborations? Is it possible to work under heterodox bishops or in dioceses dominated by liberalism and Catholicism? When should evangelicals separate or create alternative structures? In these history lectures, we will examine the changing fortunes of evangelicals in the Church of England since the 1960s, and their strategies for renewing, contesting and sometimes exiting Anglicanism.
