About this Event
Note: This is a training event for volunteers only. No kayak fishing.
Kayak Fishing Outings for veterans of all eras, first responders, and their families.
A kayak, PFD, fishing gear, license, instruction, and volunteer guide is provided by Heroes on the Water Northwest Chapter for registed participants requesting use of gear. No prior experience required.
Heroes on the Water programs are proven to be effective in reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress, increasing healing of traumatic brain injury, and improving overall well-being for participants.
Our goal is to provide heroes with a way to positively improve their lives, enhance their family dynamic, and impact their community in a healthy and lasting way.
Details and What to expect:
Complete 3-Step Registration Process for all attendees.
All attendees must submit signed waivers electronically using legal first and last names for two required waivers 1.) Release of Liability Waiver and 2.) Annual Media Waiver. Media waiver due annually so once per year only.
Register for outing using the eventbritedotcom registration system when provided. Please be advised that authorized adult must sign and submit registration and waivers for minors.
Our local chapter is 100% volunteer-based with many fellow veterans as fishing coaches ready to share the HOW experience with you! Fishing permit and necessary kayak fishing equipment will be provided for registered participants requesting use of gear.
Participants on-time to secure parking, we will want to try to be on the water one (1) hour from event start time. Kayak reservations cannot be guaranteed for late arrivals unless prior notice provided.
Volunteers arrive 1 to 2 hours prior to event to have time for setup. Please contact us via email and/or text to complete registration process.
Size and weight limits apply, please message us if you exceed 250lbs. If we cannot get you out on a kayak for any reason, there is shorefishing available at most outings but message us to confirm. Limited Assets in quantity and sizes so please come dressed appropriately. Those unable to kayak may have the option to fish from shore if location permits.
Come Informed and Prepared:
- Events are rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe.
- Dress for weather and conditions. Something to keep feet warm and dry! Raincoats, Gloves, Hats, and Face Mask can also help keep warm during colder climate or help provide sun protection. Wearing Waders if you have one is also an option.Events are rain or shine, unless unsafe.
- Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet.
- Bring a towel and change of clothes for drive home in case you get wet.
- Bring Cooler for your Catch.
- Free Parking at Venue Provided, if applicable.
- Check your messages and/or Chapter FB page for any changes or updates due to weather or unforeseen circumstances morning of event. Most outings are rain or shine!
- Drinking water, snacks, and lunch available for registered attendees but we cannot guarantee meals for those with allergies or dietary restrictions unless given at advance notice to plan accordingly. Breakfast and coffee not always available.
- While out on the water, don't forget our #1 Rule! Safety First! PFD/ Lifevest must be worn properly at all times while out on the water.
- Upon arrival, you do not need to pay for entry or parking. Just go straight to available parking. If questioned at entry, just let staff know you are with the Heroes On the Water group.
- Please do not park in spaces reserved for trailers and boats.
- Find us setting up by our trailer and by the water. Check-in and Check-out.
- Please plan to arrive early or on-time, we cannot guarantee use of kayak and fishing equipment for late arrivals. We try to get everyone out on the water before 8 AM & Back to shore for lunch by 1 PM.
Please let us know in advance of any allergies, if you exceed 250lbs, need assistance with registration or specific needs or have questions and/or concerns.
Due to the complexity of the type of fishing we will be doing and the number of power boats that may be on the water children must be big enough to operate their own kayak and have some experience fishing. Some locations are not suitable for small children. Some locations do not have public restrooms but in most cases we will provide a portable toilet aka honeybucket or camping tent with portable toilet and handwashing station.
