The run/walk registration will open at 6:45 a.m. with the race beginning at 8 a.m. and is $30 to participate. The health expo will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and is free.

This year, we are thrilled to bring back the impactful Sickle Cell Walk/Run to bring awareness to Sickle Cell Disease, and make a difference in the lives of those living with sickle cell disease in Acadiana. Together, we strive to create a meaningful impact and raise awareness about sickle cell disease.

By participating in this event, you are not only taking strides towards your own health and wellness but also extending a helping hand to the community. All funds raised will be reinvested to support and advocate for individuals affected by sickle cell disease, ensuring they receive the care and resources they need.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited red blood disorder that affects 1 in 375 African Americans and 100,000 Americans. Healthy red blood cells are round and move through small blood vessels to carry oxygen throughout the body. The red blood cells in someone one who has SCD are C-shaped and become hard and sticky. The sickle shape makes it hard to flow through the blood vessels and prevents oxygen throughout the body. When the sickle cells get stuck in the small blood vessels it clogs the blood flow and creates a pain crisis.

The sickle cells often die early which causes shortage for red blood cells, which causes the need for blood transfusions.

Many patients have to receive blood transfusions to help manage their sickle cell disease. This is why it is important to donate blood. You can help save a life by donating. Click here to learn more.
