About this Event
The leaders of the 2024-25 Bay Area Heat Mapping Campaign are excited to announce the launch of the Cool Cities Coalition (CCC), an organization dedicated to building climate resilient cities that are prepared for the threat of extreme heat.
The CCC is launching at the 2025 Extreme Heat Summit on Sunday, August 17th, at the Cooley Landing Education Center in East Palo Alto from 1-3pm. The Summit will feature public policy and emergency preparedness experts discussing best practices for protecting our cities against the rising threat of extreme heat. The summit is being co-sponsored by Youth Community Service, Acterra, MenloSpark, 350 Palo Alto, Canopy, the Palo Alto Student Climate Coalition (PASCC), Stanford Climate and Health, the City of Palo Alto, and the City of East Palo Alto.
Join us on Sunday, August 17th from 1-3pm at the Cooley Landing Education Center in East Palo Alto for engaging conversations and free lunch and cookies from Veggie Grill.
The 2025 Extreme Heat Summit will feature a speaker panel including Director of Emergency Management for San Mateo County Dr. Shruti Dhapodkar, former Mayor of Belmont and public policy expert Davina Hurt, Vice Mayor of Palo Alto Vicki Veenker, and program manager at Climate Resilient Communities Kamille Lang.
The panel will be followed by an interactive Q&A and comment section to solicit feedback and ideas from attendees. This convening will bring leaders across the Bay Area together to share creative ideas to build community climate resilience.
Mission and Founding of the Cool Cities Coalition:
Climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of extreme heat events. Our planet, our cities, and our communities are only going to get hotter. Last summer, the Palo Alto Student Climate Coalition partnered with NOAA to conduct the 2024-2025 Bay Area Heat Mapping Campaign to map the distribution of extreme heat in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, and Menlo Park. The data collected highlighted hot spots throughout the cities where cooling solutions (like expanding tree canopy) are most needed.
The campaign leaders are now launching the Cool Cities Coalition (CCC), an organization focused on deploying cooling solutions and bringing cities together to build resilience to extreme heat. We are working to build relationships with city leaders and design and implement effective policy.
