Stephen Tapp, Chief Economist, Canadian Chamber of Commerce

Stephen Tapp is a key member of the Chamber’s executive leadership team, responsible for the operations of the Business Data Lab as well as economic analysis and research.

Stephen is also the President of the Canadian Association for Business Economics and a member of the Canadian Statistics Advisory Council.

He has over 20 years of experience at many of Canada’s top economic organizations including at: Export Development Canada as the Deputy Chief Economist, the Bank of Canada, Parliamentary Budget Office, Finance Canada, think tanks as well as academia.

Millan Mulraine, Chief Economist, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan

Millan Mulraine joined Ontario Teachers' as the Chief Economist in 2016, after close to 10 years with TD Securities – most recently as Deputy Chief US Economist in New York, where he was responsible for directing U.S. economic research and rates strategy. Millan leads the Global Macro Insights Group at Ontario Teachers’ and is responsible for designing and conducting analytical macro-oriented research aimed at providing thought-leadership within Ontario Teachers’ on global economic, policy, financial markets, and geopolitical issues to inform key Total Fund decisions on major investment themes and risks.

Millan is very passionate about (and has been a strong advocate for) diversity, equity, and inclusion in the finance industry. He led the Multicultural@Teachers’ Employee Resource Group, which is aimed at fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture at Ontario Teachers’, as well as building bridges with external partners to advance DEI in our broader finance community. Millan is a member of the Board of Governors of George Brown College, Toronto, a Board Director at VersaFi (formerly Women in Capital Markets), he also serves also as a Director at SeaCube, New Jersey.

He holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics and Statistics from the University of the West Indies (Mona), Jamaica, an MSc in Economics from the University of Warwick, England, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto. Millan also holds an ICD.D certification and an Executive MBA from Rotman School of Management.

Leslie Preston, Senior Economist & Managing Director, TD

Leslie Preston has been with TD Economics since 2011, and has nearly twenty years’ experience as an economist. In her current role as a Managing Director and Senior Economist, she leads a team of economists to provide economic analysis and forecasts to TD clients and stakeholders. The team delivers on a wide scope of research, covering the U.S., Canadian, and global economies. She regularly speaks about the eco- nomic outlook to various internal and external audiences, and provides economic commentary to the media. Leslie holds a Masters of Arts degree in economics from the University of Toronto and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Queen’s University.

Moderator: Christine Dobby, Finance Reporter, Bloomberg Canada

Christine Dobby is an award-winning journalist who covers finance and banking for Bloomberg News in Toronto and writes the weekly email newsletter Bay Street Edition. She has reported on Canadian business since 2010 and has held staff positions at the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and Financial Post. Christine has a history degree from McGill University, a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and practised family law before pursuing a masters in journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University.
