About this Event
Bare root strawberry plants are available for pre-order. These are BARE-ROOT plants. That means they are shipped without soil. They can be kept refrigerated for a week or two after they arrive, but should be planted as soon as possible for best results.
This year we have two choices. Your choices are 'San Andreas' and 'Chandler' bare root strawberry plants. ''San Andreas" does well in warmer climates. 'Chandler' is a long-time variety used in the commercial and home production. 'San Andreas' is a day-neutral plant, while 'Chandler' is a short-day plant. This means that short day plants will flower in winter and harvest around June while the day-neutral plant is not affected by day length and will flower throughout the growing season. Using a combination of plants can extend your berry season.
Plants should arrive around October 24th and will be available for pick-up at the Columbia County Extension Office. We cannot guarantee the exact day the plants will arrive. It will depend on shipping. You will be contacted via email first and then phone when they are ready for pick-up. Please check out our educational information about strawberries at https://sites.google.com/ufl.edu/cc-strawberries/home. Plants that are not picked up after 4 weeks will be donated to one of our non-profits we support (schools or VA Hospital).
Plants that are donated will be sent to the school or the VA Hospital depending on which you choose. We work with these organizations to make sure they are successful with their plants.
