About this Event

Come join us as we celebrate the launch of the 2024 Parkdale Community Plan!

After four years of in-depth engagement and collective visioning, the 2024 Parkdale Community Plan is ready! This community plan embodies the tireless contributions, passion, and dedication of countless individuals and organizations in Parkdale.

Please join us on Saturday April 27, 2024 from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM at Toronto Public Library - Parkdale to gather as a community and celebrate this monumental initiative that is here because of the tireless commitment of Parkdale. We will share a Community Plan that will articulate strategies to address the heightened displacement in the neighbourhood, the soaring food prices, amongst other needs, while emphasizing the power in the collective, and ground our roots in movement building.

Our celebration will include:

  • Delving into the process that led us here, with Mercedes Sharpe-Zayas and community leaders
  • Musical performances by Wynona Maracle and other talented artists
  • Complementary and delicious cuisine from local restaurants and caterers
  • Do-It-Yourself silk screening with Jeffery Lyon - bring your own t-shirt! (fabric for patches will be available)

Childminding will be available, and translation services will be provided in Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, and Tibetan.

Background

The 2016 Parkdale Community Planning Study leveraged policy tools and social movements to tackle growing inequality and poverty in Parkdale. For the past eight years, this community plan has served as a blueprint for collective efforts to foster decent work, shared wealth, and equitable development in the neighbourhood.

Parkdale People's Economy has been working to update this community plan, engaging with over 400 community members, 50 local businesses, and 30 community organizations to build shared visions for the future of Parkdale. We are incredibly grateful for the efforts of this community, which were integral to the update of the 2024 Parkdale Community Plan.

This updated plan identifies community-led strategies that transform our collective visions for economic, racial, and climate justice into action. With this plan as our compass, we aim to foster values-based collaboration in Parkdale across six core themes: housing justice, solidarity economy, community health and safety, food systems, climate action, and social infrastructure.

Parkdale People's Economy

Parkdale People’s Economy, also known as Parkdale Community Economic Development (PCED) Project, is a network of over 30 community-based organizations and hundreds of community members collaborating to build decent work, shared wealth, and equitable development in Parkdale.
