The Orlando Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and its I.S. Hankins/F.A. Johnson Education Foundation are preparing for the 38th Annual MLK Commemorative Luncheon and 20th Annual MLK Leadership Forum and hope you are able to attend! Join Fraternity members and the Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission to celebrate what would be Dr. King’s 95th birthday.
The theme for this year’s Luncheon and Forum is:
“Advancing The Dream: Navigating Education Equity In Today's Landscape”
At the Luncheon, community leaders and organizations will be recognized for their contributions to the community with the prestigious DRUM MAJOR AWARD! Categories are Scholarship (student), Civic Affairs, Social Justice, Community Service and Business. Proceeds from this event provide college scholarships to local students, fund the Young Men of Distinction mentoring program and provide support to other educational initiatives of the Foundation.
OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Gerald Jones has over 20 years of experience working in Florida’s Higher Education System with Valencia College, Seminole State College, and Tallahassee Community College. In 2022, he was appointed Chair of the Florida College System’s Council of Student Affairs, serving in an advisory capacity to all 28 FCS Presidents on the issues impacting student success.
Dr. Jones is a notable expert in student development theory, DEI, and guided pathways. Recently, he was a featured panelist for the Chronicle of Higher Education’s segment on “Closing the Equity Gap in Student Success.” He has contributed to the field of academic research by expanding the literature on the challenges surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion for Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. Currently, he is a member of the National Advisory Council for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE), an organization designed to raise awareness of the issues facing race in today’s higher education ecosystem.
A native Floridian from Palatka, Florida, Gerald is a three-time graduate from the University of Central Florida, receiving his Bachelor in Political Science, Master of Public Administration, and Doctorate of Education respectively. While at UCF, he became a member of the Xi Iota Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc., in the spring of 1997, and later continued his service as a member with the Delta Xi Lambda Chapter.
