2024 Morris Minton Lectureship- Navigating the Inherent Minefield Associated with Dentist's Use of Social Media

Course Summary:

This course will discuss current topics related to Social Media and their impact on the practice of Dentistry. The American Dental Association’s Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct will be explored as it applies to Social Media and ethics and professionalism in Dentistry.

Course Presenter:

Kathleen Nichols, D.D.S., FAGD

Kathleen Nichols, D.D.S., FAGD, repurposed herself after 37 years of private dental practice in Lubbock, Texas. Graduating from Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Nichols has received fellowships in the prestigious American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists and was also awarded fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Nichols earned her fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and serves on the Texas Dental Association Council on Ethics and Judicial Affairs as well as, the American Dental Association Council of Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs where she is chair of the subcommittee on Ethics and Continuing Education. Dr. Nichols serves as part-time Clinical Faculty at the University of Texas School of Dentistry - Houston, Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health and as Clinical Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.

Dr. Nichols enjoys speaking and writing on the topic of Ethics in Dentistry. Publications include Ethical Moments articles in the Journal of the American Dental Association: What are the Ethical Considerations of using Video Social Media Platforms such as TikTok in Your Dental Practice and The Ethics Behind Social Media Influencers in Dentistry. Also publishing in the Journal of the American College of Dentistry Underserved Not Undeserving: How a West Texas Dentist is Expanding Access to Care and further reprinted int the Journal of the Texas Dental Association. Dr. Nichols has presented continuing education classes at the ADA SmileCon 2022 and 2023 and is scheduled to present at Smilecon 2024. She presented the program Blurring the Lines: the Social Media Induced Complexity of the 21st Century Dentist-Patient Relationship to the Louisville School of Dentistry SPEA Chapter as well as the Michigan Dental Association Women in Dentistry meeting and the South Plains District Dental Society. Further Dr. Nichols has been interviewed for the ADA Dental Dilemmas Podcast.

Course Topics and Objectives:

As a result of the presentation, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss the American Dental Association Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct.

  1. Identify the current trends in Social Media especially as related to the practice of Dentistry.
  2. Understand the impact of social media on dental professionalism.
  3. Discover potential risks and benefits of Social Media and how the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct apply when confronted with ethical dilemmas encountered by Dentists use of Social Media.

History of the Morris Minton Lectureship:

In recognition of her husband’s lifetime of achievements, Mrs. Morris Minton, in 1994, endowed Texas A&M University, College of Dentistry (then, Baylor College of Dentistry's) newly created Honors Series Lecture. This distinguished lecture brings national and international leaders in oral health science, education, and research to Texas A&M University, College of Dentistry.

Morris S. Minton, DDS graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1934 and practiced dentistry for 50 years in McKinney, Texas. During his lifetime, he was honored by the town in which he practiced, by then BCD and by the dental community. I addition to his numerous civic responsibilities, Dr. Minton served as president of the Texas Dental Association and as a delegate to the American Dental Association. As a member of the then, BCD board of trustees, he was instrumental in establishing this college as the only independent institution of oral medicine not associated with another healthcare facility. His leadership efforts earned him the recognition of Distinguished Alumnus from the then Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association.
