No one brings biting sarcasm and utter sincerity like the musicians of the EYSO. Dmitri Shostakovich’s unique musical fingerprint blazes in the hands of the orchestra’s young musicians, who leave everything on the stage as the composer’s Ninth Symphony oscillates between brilliant humor and overwhelming terror, manic joy and debilitating depression, biting sarcasm and utter sincerity. Audiences will physically feel the power and commitment of the EYSO musicians in the first piece of the concert as it reverberates through Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. Mood music suited to the dark days of fall, it is easily recognized from Disney’s Fantasia and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and many a Halloween. In two concerts earlier in the day, listeners can explore Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony and witness the progression of talent from the EYSO’s youngest ensembles in music by Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
