Do you remember the mentor who helped shaped your life?
CLX invites you to the 5th annual Brother Mike Awards Ceremony on September 17th at the famed Second City where three Chicago-based youth mentors will receive $5,000 each for their outstanding contribution to the out-of-school time (OST) ecosystem and their significant impact on the lives of Chicago’s young people.
Mentors are a critical lever for change. Research shows that the greatest single factor in a child's success is a meaningful relationship with a caring adult. CLX believes mentors should be celebrated and honored for their dedication to Chicago's young people.
The Brother Mike Awards is named after "Brother Mike" Hawkins a Chicago based poet, activist, revolutionary, loving partner, outstanding educator and member of the CLX community. Through his love of mentorship, "Brother Mike" inspired hundreds of Chicago youth to become their greatest selves.
Come be a part of the CLX community for a fun-filled, inspiring evening with fantastic drinks and food provided by Second City's 1959 Kitchen & Bar as well as a special performance by renowned, award winning Chicago-based singer, songwriter and poet, .
Jamila Woods is a poet, songwriter, and performing artist from the South Side of Chicago. Her first solo album, HEAVN was released by JagJaguwar Records in 2017 to critical acclaim. Her sophomore offering, LEGACY! LEGACY! (2019), features 12 tracks named after writers, thinkers, and visual artists who have influenced the creator’s life and work — including James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni and Sonia Sanchez.
An internationally touring artist, Jamila has been featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk, CBS This Morning, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She has shared stages with Corinne Bailey Rae, Rafael Saadiq, Bonobo, Common, Chance the Rapper, Brittany Howard, Macklemore, and many others. Her most recent project, Water Made Us, was released by JagJaguwar Records in October 2023.
