Paint your favorite furry (or feathered!) friend
Turn your beloved pet into a frame-worthy watercolor keepsake in this relaxed, two-week pet portrait workshop at my Portsmouth studio. Whether you’re brand new to watercolor or you’ve painted with me before, this series will gently walk you through the process step-by-step—no drawing “talent” required.
Over two sessions, you’ll learn how to:
• Choose a great reference photo and learn how to layer and approach your painting
• What to look for when creating the base
• Mix lively fur and feather colors using a limited palette
• Capture soulful eyes and expressive features
• Add finishing touches that make your pet’s personality shine
Week 1 – Sketch & First Layers
We’ll start by working from your chosen pet photo, planning a simple composition, and creating a light trace. Then we’ll dive into the first watercolor layers: soft fur washes, basic markings, and gentle shadows to establish shape and form with a focus on colors.
Week 2 – Details, Depth & Personality
In our second session, we’ll focus on eyes, noses, whiskers, and all the little quirks that make your pet them. You’ll refine shadows, deepen color, and learn how to know when your painting is “done” (and how not to overwork it!).
What’s Included
• 2 instructor-led classes at my Portsmouth studio
• Step-by-step demonstration and individual help
• Quality watercolor paper for your final portrait
• Shared use of paints, palettes, and water cups
• Light, cozy creative atmosphere (and plenty of encouragement)
What to Bring
• Your favorite pick me up snacks and beverages. (Tea / coffee bar in the studio for your use!)
• Your phone with your reference photo on there ready to pull up
• Readers/glasses if you use them—those details can be tiny!
This workshop is perfect for:
• Beginners who love their pets and want to try watercolor
• Returning students ready for a more focused project
• Anyone who wants a meaningful, handmade gift or keepsake
You’ll head home with a finished (or very close to finished) pet portrait, new watercolor skills, and a heart full of warm fuzzies.
Includes 2 hours of free studio time to add any finishes you didn’t have time to complete in class if needed.
