2 Day Natural Paint Making Workshop: Egg Tempera

This is an immersive 2 Day Workshop focused on the ancient practice of making paint from locally foraged natural earth pigments using egg tempera.

Rooted in centuries old painting traditions, egg tempera offers a direct and intimate way of working with color, one that requires few materials, minimal setup, and deep attention. In this workshop, participants will learn how raw earth minerals are transformed into luminous, archival pigments and paints using simple ingredients. Through guided foraging, pigment processing, and hands on guidance, participants will create their own natural pigments before learning how to bind them into egg tempera paint.

Saturday, February 21st, 2026

Day One begins with a group check-in at a designated meeting location in nature within 20 miles of Downtown Los Angeles (exact details shared after booking). From there, we’ll head out on a gentle, guided hike through the Los Angeles mountains, where artist Júlia Godoy will teach you how to identify potential earth pigments in the landscape, what colors and textures to look for, and how to forage responsibly and ethically. Together, we’ll collect raw earth materials and return to base camp to begin processing them into usable, artist grade pigments. You’ll learn how to clean and prepare raw materials, break them down into workable pigment, understand particle size, and observe how different soils behave during processing. The afternoon offers continued time for refinement, questions, and hands on guidance, allowing you to work at your own pace as color begins to emerge from the materials you gathered. We’ll close the day with a short group reflection, sharing insights, curiosities, and intentions as we prepare to move into paint making on Day Two.

Sunday, February 22nd, 2026

Day Two takes place in Júlia’s private art studio in Downtown Los Angeles (exact address and access details shared after registration). We’ll begin by organizing and preparing the pigments processed on Day One, covering best practices for drying, storing, labeling, and documenting handmade pigments for future use. From there, participants will learn how to make egg tempera paint using egg yolk, one of the oldest and most archival binders in painting history, while also transforming eggshells into a natural white pigment, completing the cycle from raw material to paint.

The afternoon is dedicated to painting with handmade pigments, where Júlia will guide the group through foundational egg tempera techniques, brush handling, and understanding how natural pigments behave differently from commercial paints. Emphasis is placed on intuition, material awareness, and letting the process unfold naturally. We’ll close the workshop with a reflective circle, sharing insights, surprises, and questions, and discussing how to continue working with natural pigments beyond the studio. Participants will leave with handmade pigments, egg tempera paint, and a deeper, embodied relationship to their materials and creative process.

All supplies required for egg tempera paint making will be provided for participants to use during the workshop. Materials for pigment foraging and processing will be brought by participants, as learning how to source and prepare pigment from the land is an important part of the experience. A detailed materials guide with exact specifications, links, and recommendations will be shared with participants after registration.
