1BTN Sundae: Celebrating 10 years of quality, independent radio

1BTN is 10 years old! Blimey. Good Friday April 3rd 2015, was when we first aired our wares; 1 Brighton FM, as we were back then. Fast forward to the present day and we find ourselves here, with almost 3600 odd days of programming behind us. A few hundred presenters have given their time contributing to our ongoing legacy. Some household names in there, some less well known, but each one of them curating their show, with the utmost love. Some of those presenters that have been with us from day one are still here! There’s so much that has gone on in our time, too much to get into here, It’s been quite the ride.
We celebrate our 10th Birthday, with a party. Of course we do! We had to make this a bit special, so we have booked two of our favourite Djs to come and share the love, with us.
Introducing, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy & Aroop Roy!
As testimonials go, this one provided by Vinyl Factory when discussing our headliner, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy takes some beating: “The biggest heroes of the underground typically wouldn’t describe themselves as such. Frankie Knuckles, Kelli Hand, Andrew Weatherall… all possessed a humility that made them even more honourable and endearing, and they went about their business with little regard for fame and a distaste for industry bullshit. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy falls firmly into this category.” Indeed. But really, anyone who has followed Colleen’s endlessly fascinating life in music shouldn’t be surprised to see her lauded in such terms. She is someone that has dedicated every inch of her soul and being to the pursuit of music.
Whether she’s DJing at her Love Dancin’ sound system at We Out Here, musically hosting the Loft parties, curating a Classic Album Sundays event at the Royal Albert Hall, presenting her weekly Balearic Breakfast radio show or remixing Róisín Murphy there’s always an abundance of impulses bubbling away. There’s the desire to entertain – to put a smile on people’s faces; a need to curate – to give the audience more than just a song; and an extension of this is education. Not in any dictatorial fashion, it’s more about turning people on to new sounds, new ways of thinking, maybe even new ways of living.
In support, we have producer, musician and label head, Aroop Roy. Aroop's eclectic productions have become a mainstay for DJs across scenes and generations, with Gilles Peterson calling him 'a brilliant producer, who never fails'. In recent years, he has been high in demand as a remixer, working for both underground and major labels.Like his productions, his sets are full of personality and style and have earned him a reputation as a uniquely gifted DJ. In 2022, his warmup for Mr Scruff at We Out Here Festival impressed the legendary UK selector so much, that he invited him to stay on the decks to close the festival back-to-back, describing Aroop as a 'ridiculously skilled selector, musically able to move in any direction with ease'. Aroop is now enjoying huge momentum, causing wild scenes at places like Fabric, Printworks, Defected Croatia, Hi Ibiza and Gilles Peterson's Worldwide and We Out Here festivals.
1BTN All Stars. It's a 1BTN party, so what else would you expect, other than a glut of your favourite presenters playing throughout the day and night? We have a who’s who to share, with you. More details to come soon.
Brighton Sundae have been putting on great Sunday daytime parties for a while now, with them taking up residency at Patterns on the first Sunday of the month. The likes of Robert Luis, Tina Edwards and many more have helped to elevate this monthly to a solid footing, with a regular and like-minded crowd. Brighton Sundae have also recently started a monthly show on 1BTN too. I guess it’s a no brainer really.
We have Patterns booked taking in the terrace, bar and club for a mammoth all day session. Tickets are on sale now. Let’s do this!
