Dear Friends,
Please join us in honoring the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, January 19th, for the 19th Annual MLK Jr. Redeeming The Prophetic Vision: The Spirit of the Work: Meeting the Moment at The Evergreen State College, Tacoma Campus (1210 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA 98405) from 2 pm - 4 pm.
Under this year’s theme, The Spirit of the Work: Meeting the Moment, The Conversation 253, in partnership with community groups and organizations, including Associated Ministries, Evergreen State College, Tacoma Campus, TDSA, and BPP, calls on our beloved community to rise to the challenge of addressing the pressing needs of today with courage, creativity, and compassion. This theme invites us to examine how we can embody Dr. King’s enduring call to action: “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.”
Together, we seek to foster spaces that promote physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being for all people without exception. As Dr. King reminded us, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This foundational safety and justice will allow us to meet the moment with resolve and unity.
This intergenerational, multi-ethnic, and participatory event will feature uplifting performances by local artists and musicians, blessings and libations from spiritual leaders, and the presentation of the 2025 Social Justice Awards. Attendees will also learn from local groups providing innovative approaches to creating resilient and diverse communities grounded in equity and justice.

YOUR SUPPORT IS WARMLY RECEIVED! This event is funded entirely by donations. We use the money to compensate artists, musicians, speakers, and vendors, to pay for the social justice awards and the food shared at the event. We need and appreciate your help in honoring the time and talent of local artists and community members working toward Dr. King’s prophetic vision.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE EVENT
Community Resources: As part of the event’s restorative experience—if you’re able—please bring donations of warm clean clothing (hats, gloves, ponchos, jackets, etc.) camping gear (tents, tarps, 18-hr hand warmers, etc.) and toiletries (including deodorant and feminine hygiene products) for our unhoused neighbors.
BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE
This year’s theme reflects Dr. King’s wisdom that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” “The Spirit of the Work” calls us to take tangible steps to heal wounds, create equitable systems, and address the challenges of our time. Together, we will meet the moment and inspire transformative change in our communities.
How We Meet the Moment:
Through Community Action: Highlighting partnerships that drive equity in municipal systems, education, and health care.
Through Innovation: Showcasing alternative approaches to safety and resilience that foster collective well-being.
Through Collaboration: Strengthening bonds across diverse groups to sustain momentum for justice and peace.
