About this Event
1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture follows the story of researchers who trace the origins of the mistranslation of two Greek words combined into one word, “homosexuals,” in the 1946 Revised Standard Version New Testament. The researchers, Kathy Baldock and Ed Oxford found a series of never-before-discovered letters, which show the head of the translation team admitting the translation error when challenged about the team’s decision.
The documentary features the man who authored the challenging letters in 1959 at the age of 21, along with insights from several prominent biblical scholars. The filmmaker's story with her non-affirming Evangelical pastor father weaves throughout the film. The movie is challenging, enlightening, inspiring, and academically solid. 1946 has received great praise and won numerous Film Festival awards.
Researcher Kathy Baldock and her friend, Netto Montoya, whose unique friendship started questioning that led to searching the archives years later, will be present at the film to offer insights and to participate in an after-film Q & R.
