About This EventThe 1904 Deaf Film Festival is an annual film festival that champions emerging Deaf filmmakers and their work. It typically features a selection of narrative and documentary films created by or about Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. While the festival itself is contemporary, its name and mission connect back to early Deaf leaders’ efforts to use film as a way of documenting and preserving sign language and Deaf culture — especially at a time when oralist education threatened the use of sign language.
After reviewing and rating over 40 film submissions, the judges have selected the top 10 best Deaf films SPECIFICALLY for YOU!
Come and enjoy the films, all in sign language! Celebrate our culture!
The 1904 Deaf Film Festival was made possible by DEAF, Inc., the Missouri Arts Council, the Regional Arts Commission STL, MCDHH, and the Starkloff Disability Institute.
