The heck with puttin’ a little spring in your step – PUT SOME SINATRA IN YOUR SPRING! Actually, how ‘bout a bunch of Ol’ Blue Eyes, a couple sprigs of Michael Buble, a dash of Dean Martin, a pinch of Bobby Darin, a smidge of Johnny Mathis, and the zest of one very exciting ‘secret ingredient’ (see below)! That’ll all go down when the 19-piece Compaq Big Band returns to one of our favorite new-to-us-in-2025 venues on Monday March 23rd with vocalist Ed Scheer of Boston’s ‘The Love Dogs’ (TLD). The whole pack'll be at Backbeat Brewing Company (BBC) in Beverly, Massachusetts. In addition to treating audiences from Beverly and beyond to monthly performances from his all-star ‘house band’ - the Backbeat Big Band (BBB) - well-known New England trumpet player Jay Daly is again teaming up with BBC owner Pete Harkins to host regional guest big bands, too. FYI, after their December-January break, the BBB returns on Monday February 9th.
And we’re not done yet with the March 23rd program yet – not by a long shot! You’ll also be treated to a terrific opening set by the accomplished North Reading (MA) High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ben Owens! They’ll be peelin’ the paint off the BBC walls beginning at 6:00pm with eight saxes, four trombones, five trumpets, bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, vocalists, AND vibes!
There’s no cover charge for this show. We’re on 7:00pm-9:30pm. Doors Open 5:00pm. All seating is General Admission, and capacity is limited – SO GET THERE EARLY! Casual dress.
BBC is located at 31A Park Street in downtown Beverly, just across from the MBTA commuter rail station – not very far off Route 128. There’s plenty of inexpensive parking adjacent to/near the venue, including at the MBTA parking garage at 100 Rantoul Street ($4 cash or card) and metered on-street spaces ($1/hour up until 8:00pm - quarters, card, or Passport Parking App)
BBC offers a wide assortment of fresh craft beers brewed on premises, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. And, they serve great pizza and bar snacks. As is always the case when we perform, we’re bringing our complete, state-of-the-art professional sound reinforcement system and ultra-talented engineer to mix, so you’ll be able to hear everything from both big bands and their vocalists throughout the BBC space.
Ed Scheer has been delighting New England audiences as the founder and front man of Boston’s ‘The Love Dogs’ for over 20 years. They do it ALL: jazz, blues, swing, jump blues, and jump swing. At home center stage as a premiere vocalist or great drummer back on the kit, Ed’s an Entertainer’s Entertainer.
On March 23rd Ed will be croonin’ out classics performed by the ‘Chairman of the Board’ as arranged by Nelson Riddle, Sy Oliver, Quincy Jones, and Billy May. We’ll also draw on fabulous arrangements from Chris Walden, Bill Holman, Thad Jones, and Gordon Goodwin, too.
And that ‘secret ingredient’? Why that’d be some ABSOLUTELY KILLER, custom, full big band orchestrations of hits from ‘The Love Dogs’, arranged by our very own Scott Tringali!
